Inflect Your Spine

You may be thinking, “I know about spinal flexion, but what is spinal inflection??”In Linguistics, inflection is a change in the form of a word (typically the ending) to express a grammatical function (such as gender, number, person, or tense).

In Baseworks, inflection is a movement of the spine following the movement goals of the INFLECT focus.

It starts from a natural position. Then there is a wave of flexion from the back of the head and down. Then, while you maintain the activation within your hip flexors, you begin to extend the spine from the lumbar and up to achieve the straightest anatomically possible line. The scapulae often have to retract to achieve a more “flat” conformation of the upper torso. Of course, because it is Baseworks, at both the flexion and extension stages of the inflect cycle, we generously add subtle micromovements to release tension and be able to keep more sense-control loops running.

Once we’ve achieved the spatial orientation of the spine in a straight line and the shoulders as far away from each other as possible, we begin once again to flex the spine from the back of the head and down. At the end of this motion, we begin to uncurl, first the hip flexion and then the spine from the abdomen and up.

In this VS, we will break down the INFLECT syntax to better understand what exactly we are doing and why, and then we will practice the INFLECT movement patterns in various Forms.

This VS will be approximately 80% practice.

Whereas the Online Practice Sessions are designed to provide the opportunity to develop your practice through repetition, the Virtual Sessions are designed to provide real-time feedback and insight, which can then be re-applied during the Online Practice Sessions.

The level of interactivity in the Virtual Sessions is dependent on the interest/involvement of the participants and may vary from session to session.

Each virtual session lasts from 60 to 90 minutes.
