The Biology of Body Awareness
Baseworks co-developer Asia Shcherbakova appeared on Matan Levkowich’s Material for The Brain podcast. In the conversation, they talked about body awareness, her recovery from epilepsy through dance, and how her background as a biologist affected how she approached it.
The discussion also explored how individual stories and ideas affect a pedagogical approach and actual experiences in movement and how different learning modalities reveal differences in our understanding of the definitions.

About Asia:
Asia holds a Master of Science in Human Genetics and a Ph.D. in Biotechnology. She has been involved in projects related to the effects of stress on learning and memory, and currently, she is studying the pro-cognitive effects of medium-chain triglycerides.
Besides her scientific research, she is a co-developer of the Baseworks Method, focusing on understanding the function of brain areas that participate in both movement and cognitive tasks and the crossover between language and movement.
About Matan:
Matan Levkowich is a dancer, teacher, and graphic designer. In 2015 he founded Movement Lab – a vehicle for movement education, choreographic work, and discursive inquiry. His practice is influenced by his enthusiasm for physical and theoretical research and revolves around the question of how to develop a meaningful relationship with the body-mind. Matan started the Material For The Brain podcast in 2021 as a medium for him and his guests to explore ideas surrounding the practical, psychosocial, and theoretical elements of working with the body.
